22kms down the beach with gnarly wind and rain was a tough day. Made a bit amazing by splendid people.
The thing about this beach is that it looks all the same and nothing much is happening.

So when a car drove toward us for a chat we were startled. The driver leans over and asks, “are you Deanna?” What the? Ha! Turns out this is my second cousin Russell that I’ve never met before, a local, and his awesome Mrs, Debbie. A hand reaches out the window and passes the kids a jar of peanut butter.

They’d heard about the possum debacle via my Auntie. Another couple have come along for the ride to see the odd family walking the beach.

Cuddles and pineapple lumps are handed out before driving off again. You beauty!
The last seven k’s were particularly tough. The kids had had enough. But thanks to Russell and Debbie we handed out treats at every kilometre, blasted some tunes and finally made it. Fair to say the beach nearly beat us that day. Somehow the little ones still managed to hoon in the dunes ‘til we called them in.
The next day we only had 7kms to get to Hukatere. A ramble on down the beach let us revel in the afternoon off at Gabi’s place. All is well.

Gnarly, made a bit amazing by splendid people.
