Who we are and what we are doing out here in the wild.
WALK top to bottom ▲ AOTEAROA new zealand ▲ 6 months
Kia Ora e hoa mā - hello friends
We’re a family of Kiwis and Aussies who just tramped/walked the length of Aotearoa New Zealand on Te Araroa Trail. It's roughly 3000kms, took us about 6 months.
We have plenty of beaut stories to tell. Come along for the wild ride with us and join our gang.
And, no, we hadn't done any overnight hiking as a family before the trail - we were keen for an adventure and wanted to have a crack at something wild. We reckon you can too.
What’s Te Araroa Trail?
You can actually walk the length of Aotearoa New Zealand - crazy aye! The trail is called Te Araroa, or TA and in Maori it means the long pathway. There’s plenty of information about it on the TA website. Basically, a cracker of a Kiwi, journalist Geoff Chapple got stuck on the idea of the trail and worked and walked his guts off with the help of many splendid folk to make it happen. His book is a bloody good read.
Apart from getting to know the land/whenua, people/tangata and teach ourselves to feel at home in the wilderness, we also wanted to see if normalish families could do this sort of thing. We were utterly inspired after seeing the Rapsey Family from Dunedin not only made it but also had a beaut time. And with covid, and life passing us by, why not have a go?
