Rest Days ~ Oh how we dreamt of thee

A well deserved day of rest - just chilling, eating, reading and being clean sounded so dreamy in our minds.

The disappointing reality was that a day to pause actually meant there was shopping to be done, the next section to nut out, phone calls and emails to make and still, kids to manage and a strange new anxiety about getting back on trail began to brew. Not so much a holiday, but in fact, our new job.

Don't get me wrong, this is not a complaint. Just one of those things we’re learning along the way. We never expected this to be easy, so I suppose, without filming dignity losing meltdowns and showing the bad parts so much, I'm just trying to paint a more wholesome picture.

We ended up taking 3 rest days in Ahipara due to a shabby forecast full of rain and wind. Not the time to be taking on our first gnarly forest and the highest peak in Northland.

So, instead, we did the shopping in Kaitaia, took over a cheap hotel room to sort out our next week of food and do nit treatments (can you believe it!) for the whole family after we noticed Golds scratching in her sleep. Eeeeek, we must have imported those from Oz somehow. Filthy animals.
Back to Ahipara, we waited out the worst of the rain at Endless Summer Lodge (very rad place and people) escaping to the beach in the driest patches to walk the owners dog and keep our bodies from seizing up.

Rest days = logistics days.
